Walking.

You know...backpacking across Europe is a time honored tradition. You walk parts, you take the train for parts.

However you can often fly cheaper between major cities than taking the train.

Travelling around Europe is not cheap nowadays, especially in those countries where you have to pay in euros. In those countries which belong to EU, but don´t use euros yet, it´s perhaps cheaper to use trains. I don´t recommend hitch hiking or using a bike, both are dangerous in their own way. Check with the tourist web site of each country you are thinking of visiting or their embassies or consulates, if you have one near you, pay a visit to them, or phone them. I´m sure you have them in your country. Of course it´s a hard job if you plan to visit many countries, but check it out some way or the other. Anyway good luck with your travelling and I hope you will love it.

try to book the budget airlines - a few months in advance.
there's so many low budget airlines nowdays and the price totally nothing if you book at the right time to the right place, as long as you flexsible with time and place.

To save more money - try to get a free accomodation - staying at friend's place for example. You should start chat on the net and making a new friends all over europe and ask wheather you can stay with them during your europe trip or not ;) it will save a lot - just a suggestion hehe...

flying. check out ryanair.com
my friends & I flew from Rome to Paris for 9 euro...which is ridiculously cheap! We also flew from Paris to Glasgow for under 25 euro. Most people take the eurotrain & forget about flying. Also, there are some ferries from Italy to Greece that aren't that expensive. When in cities (aka: Rome, Athens, etc...) I would walk or catch a metro (subway). Just remember to watch out for gypsy pickpocketers in Rome & try to pick up a map to know where the major sights are.
Hope that helps!

ps. Don't hitchhike!

Back Packing and Hitch-hiking.

Note: This may create a lengthier enroute travel time and may severly increase life-threatening hazards; therefore suggested, to carry some form of concealed weaponry (i.e. extending blunt razor-blade, brass-knuckles and possibly a sock filled with rolled quarters)
