Why do anything?
The turtle was probably looking for a place to lay eggs.

I saw about 10 nesting painted turtles yesterday myself, and somehow I didn't panic.

Give it some vegies to eat and water to drink, then put up posters with a photo on it in the neighborhood. Go door to door with him (or her) and ask people if they lost a trutle. There may be some child close by who has lost their best friend. If this doesn't work, then place a free ad in a local penny saver. Turtles are slow and I bet he didn't travel too far.

get a tank and put drops in the water that will remove the chlorine from it.( you can but that at a pet store). put somewhere in the tank and spot where the turtle can lay out of water and rest. you can feed it turtle food or lettuce

Take it to the nearest creek, pond,or lake, and set it free. This happens to me nearly every summer. They are quite messy if kept as pets, and need special lighting and a very large, filtered tank, unless you want to build it a large outdoor pen with a pond. :)

Leave it. If you have pets that will hurt it, keep them in the house for awhile. Do not keep it if it is wild.
