Yes, I agree with you not only are those words showing that you appreciate someone doing something, but it's a matter of respect and politeness. People that don't say those words are sometimes at a disadvantage in several situations.

Very far. I am amazed when I am out shopping how few store people say "thank you for your business," instead they tell me to have a nice day. I would much rather be thanked!

Oh gosh....... maybe it's because I live in the south, but I just can't imagine people not saying "please" and "thank you." It's just what I've been around all my life. I smile, I think this person was raised well...... was kind...... and understands what courtesy means. Yes.... it gets people far merely because it lets others know what a gentleman you are. *curtsies*

You would think it would get you further, but these days they are foreign words and most people have never used them.

They won't get you very far. I've found that NOW!!!! carries much more weight. It's also much more effective if followed by various threats.

Good manners still count. You will get further with them than without. I'm glad I was taught good manners, and I passed them onto my children.

It's not saying them that matters, it's meaning them.
I've heard British people say 'Please' and 'Thank you' as they were a slap across the face.
I'm British, and I speak about 6 languages. In some languages 'Please' and 'Thank you' don't exist as they are known in english, but are these people discourteous? Not, necessarily.

It is truly sad how, people just expect things w/out the common courtesy of a "please" or a "thank you"!!!! The general rudeness of today really irks me! So, to answer your question, a simple "please" & "thank you" will go quite far with me.
