About 25 laps. Do it stopping just a few times and for short periods, you should be good. I got 25 laps by assuming you'd want to swim about 800 yds a day. That's a good length to swim if you just want to lose a few pounds. Make sure you swim about half the laps hard and some of them easy. And keep and eye on your mechanics. A bad stroke could leave you injured, especially your shoulders.

It's not about the laps you do, it's the duration and intensity of the workout. 30 minutes, 3 times a week at light-to-medium intensity will help you lose 2 pounds per week. All you have to do is keep moving, don't worry about how far you are going. Swim slowly and steadily for 30 minutes at a time and you'll be doing your body a world of good, especially your heart! If you cut out only 500 calories from your current caloric intake and exercise 3 times a week you will lose a healthy amount of weight in a healthy amount of time and will feel amazing about it!

Good luck!!!
