When looking at the head on my chevy 350 how do I determine which is the intake valve and which is the exhaust valve?

Intake valve will line up with the intake port from the intake manifold and the exhaust valve will line up with the exhaust port going to the exhaust manifold or header....intake is usually larger of the two.

the intake valve is usually bigger and on the left. the exhaust valve is usually smaller and on the right. at least it is true in small engines (lawnmowers).
