It is called the funny bone because when you hit it on an item it makes a ticklish like pain.
Its happened to me.

Two reasons:
1) When you hit the end of it at the elbow, it cause that "funny" sensation in your hand.
2) The anatomical name for it is the humerus, which sounds like "humorous" (i.e. funny).

i don't know, but it always made me mad when I'd hit it, and it never failed, there was always a group of old people around to watch me hit it, and they'd laugh and say, "It isn't funny is it?"
