I am an alternative medicinal therapist and an ex nurse. There are several causes for this:
Excess gas-excess fluid retention.Pain is mainly caused by the stretching of the cervix as in 'labour pains, but on a smaller scale. Check your diet, For fluid retention drink dandelion tea or you can buy special tablets from the health shop for this. A hot water bottle placed on your lower back.Cut out fizzy drinks, take cranberry/blueberry juice instead.Your bowels also play an important part,if they are not functioning properly then this will add to your problem. You should take either:black coshosh, agnus castus or dong quai, they all help with these problems, usually agnus castus is the best for your age group. They take a little time to get into the system so be patient

It's not your stomach that's hurting. The area below your belly button is partly where your uterus is located and it's expanding and contracting to remove the cells that you did not use to get pregnant with. All that expansion and contraction is what is creating the pain.

In the mean time you can take Midol, Pamprin, and apply a heatting pad the the sore area. Even hot baths help some.

If you want to lessen the pain of a period in the future, go on birth control - either the pill or the patch. The extra hormones take away the pain.

When you have a period the muscle in your stomach contract very much like would happen when you are having a baby but not as intense although if you are having a particularly bad monthly you may think it cant get any worse it is just the process of releasing the egg just nature doing its thing the best relief is a couple of paracetamols and a hot water bottle to place on your tum or lower back it should soon pass

Your uterine muscles are contracting and forcing out the lining of the womb. I know it's awful, take painkillers from the start of the bleed, it is usually worst on the first day and then the pains get less. you can also try a hot water bottle on the stomach as the heat will help with the cramps. taking a nap usually gets rid of them too (if you can sleep!). I take magnesium and calcium supplements a week before my period is due and this has made the cramps a lot less painful. also you can chop up some fresh ginger into a cup, pour on boiling water, cover the cup for five minutes and then sip this as you would a cup of tea. ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory and can help ease those cramps. all of these things have helped me as i've had terrible cramps all my menstruating life. i'm sorry for the pain, if it makes you feel better remember millions of other women are going through the same thing! You're like me, you have bad menstrual cramps. I take ibuprofen and tylenol every period every 4-6 hrs and sometimes that's not enough to ease the pain. For me it hurts so bad that I feel sick to the stomach and my legs start to ache. I cramps so bad my lower abdomen is actually sore for days. Some girls ask doctors for special painkillers that are stronger than over the counter. You should probably see a gyno if your a heavy bleeder because that's sometimes a sign of endometriosis which should be treated. Good luck

since i began menstruating i would have excruciating pain, i would throw up, have diarrhea and/or constipation. i wouldn't be able to walk, no pain reliever would help in normal doses. I got on birth control and after about 6 months -- no more cramps. i have now been off of birth control for a year...and no cramps but i have irregular period and high testosterone levels ..basically my hormones are all messed up. it is really hard because the cramps suck but now i feel upset that i think birth control made me have hormonal imbalance. my suggestion is to see your doc and get a really good pain killer. i used to take atleast 800 mg of tylenol and hot baths or a heating pad until i could fall asleep.

Hi Anna,

as most women know, this is such an painful or at least uncomfortable time. Best thing is to take a painkiller (providing your not on other medication etc), a hot waterbottle, rest, eat some chocolate, take a bath as this can help cramps, sex or masturbation is supposed to help to, although i don't know your age and would not condone the sex if you were too young obviously. Deep breaths and take care of yourself..dont do anything to strenuous....make everyone look after you!

Best of luck!

The lining of your uterus is traveling through a tiny canal, your experiencing cramps because your muscles are constricting to push the waste out. Try a heat pad on your stomach to ease the pain.

i used to have really bad period pains, used to be collapsed on the floor with them!
it also made me sick, diarrhoea, feint, it was horrible.
i tried feminax which helped to some extend but not all the time. so i went to the doctor and tried the pill -didnt work. tried the injection -definitely helped and it stopped my periods but not all of the symptoms. then i had the implant and its great, i have no periods and no pain and i dont have to worry about either (or getting pregnant come to that) for the next 3 years!

I know how it feels, cos before I went on the pill it was unbearable. It is like contractions when you are pregnant. Get some Feminax pain killers from the chemist specially for period pains, and nurse a hot water bottle. hope this helps.
When you go on the pill you should find that period pain eases dramatically.
