Well I have lived here 8 years and moved 8 times... I have lived on every side of town, the closest I ever came to quiet was living 45 minutes outside Orlando in Groveland, FL. I can tell you from experience that a condo or townhouse is a BAD idea in Orlando. When a criminal buys the one beside you there is nothing you can do (it happened to me).
I really want to answer your question in a reasonable maner but that "low crime rate" part is really making it hard.. you do know our murder rate last year broke all kinds of records. We were also voted "most angry city in the US" last year. Our top headline in the news right now is that the ATF and FBI are both sending in task forces to try and get things under control. Here is that news story from two days ago

I have a website also (http://www.orlandofloridasucks.com).. due to it being VERY negative some people tend to dismiss it. I would encourage you to start reading our local news on www.orlandosentinal.com or www.local6.com every day and be SURE you know what you are doing.

Even in the less premiere areas like Bellflower / Lakewood / Downey / Buena Park, you are going to be looking at at least $1200 per month rent. Maybe as high as $1800, if you are looking for a 3 bedroom. - these are decent areas with minimal crime. If you can't afford this, now probably isn't the time to move back. I'm sure there are similar areas in other parts of LA / OC but these are the areas I'm familiar with. Also, just because the city is in LA County does not mean it's an LA school. Lakewood has some of the best schools in the country.

Depends on how much money you want to spend. If you're looking to spend a good amount, Winter Park or Maitland is a very nice area. Maybe a little cheaper you could try Millenia but this is a rather busy area. If you'd be willing to drive further out, Sanford is a nice quiet cheaper option. Also Altamonte is pretty nice but it's starting to become more and more busy. Also the UCF area has nice areas but lots of traffic going towards downtown. No matter what you will probably hit a lot of traffic cause that's just Orlando. If you want to avoid that, I would stay away from the attractions area as much as possible and go either towards Winter Garden or Sanford. Good luck, hope that helps!

My parents just bought a condo down in Orlando recently. It's a new development and very nice. They told me it was right near the airport, convention center and universal studios. Look in those areas. If there are any left to buy it's good investment because that area should be booming in the next few years. If not then you can definitely always rent.

Lake Nona is a very nice part of Orlando. My husband and I live there, and we have never had any problems in our neighborhood, or in any of the areas around us. We are about 10 minutes from Orlando International Airport, and there are a lot of new town homes off of Lee Vista as well. Lake Nona is off of toll 528 and Narcoossee Rd. Good luck with your search!

Winter Park is a nice area, centrally located to downtown Orlando and the airport and plenty of restaurants and malls.
Longwood is also a really nice area. There are a lot of big, old trees and beautiful homes, nice restaurants, shops.

Depends on how much you want to spend. Millenia is a nice upscale, new area with luxurious condos and villas. Large shopping district. Windermere is also very nice but more expensive. I live in Altamonte Springs and over here, Maitland and Winter Park is older, but still a very nice place to live. Stay away from places like Pine Hills, Casselberry, East Orlando and Kissimmee.
