I'm trying to pick a laptop. I DO NOT WANT A MAC DON"T EVEN BRING IT UP haha. But I just want something not too complicated and preferably under $1000. Right now I'm kind of between Dell, Toshiba, and HP. It seems like everyone has their good and bad stories about these companies and I just wanted some opinions on your personal experiences with either the service or the computer itself. I've heard HP is getting better, Dell has the best customer service, and Toshiba is probably the best of the three overall. Any info would be really helpful-I wouldn't need the notebook for anything other than school stuff, music, and maybe some pictures.

If you want durability Dell is the way to go, if you want light weight, HP is the way to go. If you want the best of both worlds go with Toshiba.

I dropped my dell three times down a flight of stairs because of an unzipped back pack. The first two times there were minor scratches but it was working fine. The third time the screen broke but when I hooked it up to a monitor it actually worked.

I like the Protege model by Toshiba they're very light weight and durable.

The most important factor in a laptop is the processor. There are two manufacturers of processors and that is Intel and AMD.

The Intel Core 2 Duo is the superior processor but can cost twice as much. An AMD 64 X2 deliverers virtually the same performance at half the cost. Hp, Dell, Toshiba, use both chips.

The Intel Core 2 Duo has the potential to last 8 hours plus, but with the money you'll save from buying an AMD 64 X2 you can buy a couple extra high performance batteries. You could probably even buy performance RAM to add a little more speed.

Good Luck,
PR

Well you should be happy to know I have owned all three types of comps.

Hp- I have had an hp 98 and it still works, even though i don't use it anymore. Hps can last very long if you use them right. I also have an hp laptop. DV6000 it works very well, and the only problem I have had with it was the built-in-wireless.

Toshiba- I have had a Toshiba Satellite and it lasted me about 3 years. It worked pretty well for two years. Then I had a problem with the screen. It was loose so it would keep falling down. It had to hold it with paper clips. I'm not sure if it got loose cause of me or the hardware. Now it has a problem with the cooling system. I think that means to replace the fan.I wouldn't recommend a Toshiba.

Dell- I have a Dell D310. It has been working for about 3 years with no upgrades. I still use it. I think Dell has great comps. Their laptops have won so many awards.

I would say either Hp or Dell is great.

Both are excellent. Dell is a litle better for VALUE, but HP has slighltly better comps in their CURRENT line. Their old stuff uner Carly was Horrid and their only now within the past year getting better. I'd even add compaq to your list, but that is about all for the value pcs. Do not try to go with emachines/acer/gateway, etc. A cheap price will not help you if you have a lemon. I'd have to agree With the stereotype except that Dell has best tech support, ot customer service. Dell cust service is in India where alot of people report polite but uncaring incompetance. Dell techs are all independatly certified unlike all the other companies that put them through a week long training class hoping that you get someone that is actually mcdst certified.
Dell is releasing 4killers at the end of june and ALL retailers will be having pricewars in July. Hold ff as long as you can.

I have a HP Pavilion 5224nr and I love it. HP is getting better yes. I was in your shoes last year choosing a laptop for school. I aslo wanted a laptop that was capable of handling all the music I wanted on to as well. HP, I think, has the best prices for storage space, speed, and other little things you can add on to it. My roommate got a really nice HP laptop with 1GB RAM and a 80 GB hard drive (which would be absolutely prefect for your things like music, photos and school work) for under 700 dollars from HP (when getting a laptop customized...keep your eyes open for free upgrades). My laptop has survived my first year of college and still looks great and runs well today. I aslo went with HP over Dell cause of their laptop designs...I just liked the way an HP is aesthetically more pleasing to the eye then the way Dells are designed.
Hope this helps and happy laptop shopping!

Dell products are adequate, considering their relative cheapness...Their tech support is horrible and outsourced, and most of them honestly do not know what they are doing...HP service has improved considerably...Toshiba is the best quality, but their laptops can be kind of expensive...

I would go with HP, this way if something goes wrong with it, you have a better chance of getting the problem fixed, instead of an endless runaround between departments that just want to get you off the phone.

I would pick an HP over a dell. I read that dell has a lot of problems. I heard that dell puts a lot of re-manufacture parts in the tower. Toshiba or Hp is the way to go

I would say HP. There pretty good and more better than dell and toshiba. HP has better customer service and better laptops. Have not had big problems for 7 yrs from one desktop. My laptop has been fast and good. You should get HP NOTEBOOKS.

any notebook can be a good notebook, it's what you do with it that screws it. I've never used toshiba but I had an HP and a Dell. The Dell was better, but these were desktops too.

Only idiots buy an apple computer, who does really wanna spend 2-3 times the money on a computer that is slow for its price, and has got a VERY low resolution xD, i mean what the ****!! Instead of looking for a specific brand, look for the hardware INSIDE the pc. And the brands just assembles the comptuers, they dont make the hardware, which means that you should buy the computer where you the most value out of your money. Btw if we really wanna do this "mac is most stable!" kind of game, think about it this way: You can buy a similar windows based computer for 2-3 of the cost, so for the amount of money you pay for your mac computer, you acctually get a really bad computer, and since it has got lower end hardware it is acctually more unstable than "normal" windows based computer in the same price range, which have gotten ALOT better hardware. Think about it:)
