Photography uses silver salts that change when exposed to light so that with further processing the unchanged part washes away and the changed part becomes dark. This dark is the negative of the light hitting it and the more light, the darker it is. A positive image is made by having the negative on glass or plastic and shining a light through the negative onto a piece of paper with similar emulsion which is also developed.
Since photography produced an exact image, artists turned to impressionism to record emotional reaction (impressions) without the detail that previously was a standard of a realistic painting. After impressionism they went further to cubism, etc.
