My educated guess is LOW FREON. The unit is struggling to cool and keeps running and running and cannot cool because of almost no freon.

This happens to our 5 ton heat pump about every two years. Just had ours refilled 6 weeks ago. It works perfect after it is filled and the drain line is blown out. Being in Florida it is a requirement.

Call a dependable repairman.

First thing to do is turn it off and let it thaw!!! Now, while it's doing that, how ofter and when last did you change the air filter? That should be done every 3 to 6 months depending on how much you use it and how dusty the house can get.... If those have been changed regularly, and recently, then the freon charge is probably low. Now you need a professional. And make sure that they FIND THE LEAK!!! Because if it needs freon, then it HAS a leak!!!

It sounds like your air conditioner is over working to keep things cool and then freezes up. It isn't shutting off enough to prevent the pipes from freezing up: Either your air conditioner is dirty and needs to be cleaned, your thermostat is not working properly or you have lost your cooling agent due to a leak or due to slow dissipation over time.
You need to call somebody responsible who deals with air conditioning and have it checked out before it harms your air conditioner.

Sorry to hear you're going through this. It's happened to me before. I would shut off the air conditioner and let it defrost. I called an air conditioning company. They said I needed more coolent added. They recharged it and it was fine. I'd call them out but be careful to call a good company you trust. Good luck!

Freezing of the pipes, especially if they are around the condenser of your inside unit, is usually caused by low freon level. Have it checked for a leak or for low levels. If it is low, have it filled and primed. should take care of it.

Samm is probably right. My husband used to have his own business before retiring. I went with him on many calls for this and 98 percent of the time, it was low freon.

i agree with royce e you will need to check all of those things and also you will probaly need to check the contactor to make sure it is not sticking. a bad could have your condenser running while the air handler is off.that will also cause a freeze up.

I'm pretty sure if its pretty humid outside the moisture will freeze and can cause damage to air conditioning systems.

Sounds like filters and ducts need cleaning... they make the AC overwork, but there could be other problems. Call a pro.
