I have no idea if I have a CD writer or DVD writer or if there is a difference. I have a Dell laptop and I thought that the manual said I could burn dvd's - this may be universal manual for many computers, though....I saw under a similar question that someone suggested looking under the control panel/system/hardware/device manager/DVD/CD Rom drives and seeing if it lists the different: cd-r, dvd-r, etc. My computer lists: TSST corp CDRW/DVD TSL462C. Any help would be appreciated. I have large amounts of pictures to backup and thought a dvd would hold all of them, as opposed to many different cd's. I purchased some DVD+R's, figuring I had a 50/50 chance of getting the right one and the computer said insert blank disc - I don't want to waste money on the DVD-R's if I can't write to any DVD's!

The CDRW indicates that it's a CD burner (the Compact Disc Re-Writable -CDRW- means burner). Since there's no RW attached to the DVD portion, it appears to only be a DVD player, not a burner.

DVD Author Plus lets you burn your videos to play on a standard DVD player.

Hi. Your computer would call the drive CDRW/DVDRW if it was a DVD burner. Yours can burn CDs and read DVDs.

The quickest way is put a blank DVD disc into ur computer and Burn.
If it burns,u got a DVD writer..
if it doesn't, u don't have it
Btw, dont worry that the blank DVD may get spoiled... ur writer will burn only if it supports it

A CDRW/DVD means it can play or burn CD's but not burn DVD's only watch them.

i would have to say it is a cd burner that can alos ply dvds but not burn dvds
