I was in Tangier less than 2 months ago. Let me start by saying that Morocco is very safe. There are lots of con men (petty scams) that hang around Tangier, but for the most part it is very safe. It you are arriving via ship from spain, a taxi to the train station should only cost around 1-2 euro total. I wouldn't spend much time there though as the rest of Morocco, especially the smaller cities, are much more interesting than Tangier. Don't miss Chefchouen!!

Tangier is following the global trend of a total clean up, painting, and putting spotlights on facades and palmtrees. The streetchildren have been cleaned from the sea boulevard (now sleeping in streets far from the tourist eye).

Have been there 15 times in the past years and never once felt unsafe. That little edge that Tangier had though is a bit gone.

I've been on a couple of driving tours of Morocco and never once had any problems.

It can be a little daunting if you've not been somewhere like that before with people coming up to you trying to sell you something or be your guide. Just look confident and be polite.

Go for a pint at the Lord Nelson or somewhere in Gibraltar, then go to Algiceras and hop on a ferry. You'll experience a culture shock like nothing else!
