I have seen it portrayed in stories and I have seen it in real life, almost as an instinct. I know innocence is a general term but I've seen it used that way. Sometimes it's when the girl realizes there are more important things in life then herself other times it's her chastity.

Hi! I heard that girls and also boys change their hairstyle when they have their heart broken... or at least this happens in Japan... I'm Italian so this might sound quite confusing, but actually they use this kind of "trick" often in comics (the japanese "manga")... maybe it's just that you feel like changing something of yourself when your mood changes abruptly...well, this is what happens to me ^__^

Probably dates back to medieval Europe. Women wore their hair long to show that they were free of disease and chaste, and they wore it hidden under a cloth (veil, turban) or a hat of some kind depending on the local culture. A woman's head might be shorn as a sign to show that she was an adulteress or had given her virginity to someone other than her husband. Of course, there were also illnesses that they believed could be allieviated or cured by shaving off all the hair (scarlett fever is a modern example). A woman would wear her hair long and loose in many cultures on her wedding day to show her chastity and beauty (hair sometimes being the only beauty possessed if you were ravaged by small pox or a plauge as a child and left with heavy scarring, which wasn't rare).

The are old sayings that Hair is a woman's crown and glory. I am not familiar with the portrayal that you ask of, but men and sometimes woman would cut the hair of a "fallen woman" throughout the centuries. The woman of many of the occupied countries in World War Two that cohabited with German soldiers had their hair cut and sometimes shaved when the Germans were pushed out of the country.

The closest I can find to your query is some sects in the Appalachians that cut the pigtails of a girl when she has her first menses. As well there are instances were women punish themselves by chopping away their hair, but this can be for many reasons, most having nothing to do with innocence.
