my lifters on a v8 305 are knocking on my valve covers how do i fix that?

Sound like the valve cover(s) are installed backwards. The tabs that hold the sparkplug wires face the intake manifold.

Turn the valves covers around.
One side is higher than the other.

ADDED:
Use a gasket too, not just silicone.
