You have no money ever, seriously never. You're a completionist and if you could afford it or if cds and dvds were more reasonably priced you'd buy loads of them, you've got extremely diverse taste and to collect all the music and film you love will cost more money than you're ever gonna have. So is it a bad thing morally to download it for free? Also over about 10 years you've probably spent more than ten grand on movies and music.

O.K. I know technically it is stealing. I'm talking morally. Once an artist creates something it is a piece of art, I don't have to pay if I want to listen to the radio, I don't have to pay if I wan't to look at Picasso's art on the net and I don't have to pay channel 4 to watch the Sopranos so why should a digital copy of a song be any different. Is it because this copy is in my possesion and I can use it any time I want? So really the moralistic dilema comes from the fact that I now have the abbility to listen to this music or watch this film when it suits me.

its only bad because the fat cats that make the dvds and cds want the money so they can get fatter and fatter and sit on all that cash! most retail stuff is 100%-150% mark up! from clothes to dvds to toys, if most people actually knew how much it really cost to make a full dvd in its case with artwork they would realise that they are constantly being ripped off by the fat cats and would probably soon decide to download it all for free....
anyways what they hell was the internet made for if not for all the free stuff you can get on it!!!!
besides, it aint the end of the world if some people get their films n cds off the net for free, although it may eventually be the end of cinemas and some of the fat cat industries that make them... booo hoooo!
there are plenty of people that are happy to pay for the rip off priced retail stuff to compensate for the people who dont, and if you want originals theres always ebay, car boots & pre-owned shops for the more budget concerned among us!
a shop called gamestation do pre-owned dvds and you buy-one-get-one-free! what a bargain, but not as good as free of course lol.

The same as someone going into a food store picking up a ton of food, or eating fruit on display then walking out without paying. Stealing. There is no excuse at all in stealing, on another question to which I received best answer I was criticised for pointing out a simple statement that being: At the end of the day, if you don't have the money then don't get the film its as simple as that. People that download films, typically pirate copies push prices up on DVDs and harm the movie industry plus its a well known fact this also fuels crime, drug trafficking etc. I pay for my films, and I feel its wrong when people don't.

It is morally and legally theft.
If you listen to your conscience, you know it is. If that doesn't work, then put yourself in the place of the other parties here - the artist, the recording studio, and the record store - whether a brick and mortar place, or an online site where you can buy music and download it. They perform a service, they invest their own money to make this happen. They should get a return on that money, or they'll go out of business. If you were the artist, and you didn't get paid for your music, would you be upset?

I think that it is wrong to download music and videos. Would you ever go into a music store and just steal a CD or a movie. Probably not. Using the internet is a lot easier, but you can still get caught and punished. Even if you have a great interest in muisc or movies, it is not worth going to jail ofr being fined, which would set you back even more.

No. The people who you are supposedly "stealing" from do not lose their own copy of the material, you are simply making a copy of it. They also already recieve overinflated salaries for their music or film, and illegal filesharing makes a dent in their already huge and undeserved salaries.
Oh yeah and unless you download A LOT of stuff and/or make profit off it, its virtually impossible that the RIAA or whatever it is would have their eye on you.

No. Limewire is my haven. I have over 3 days time worth of songs and about 10-20 movies and videos I got from limewire. It's a file sharing network so you let them download what you have, and in turn you can download what everyone else has. Just search and it is always there no matter how rare or weird.

If you wrote a hit song and recorded it in an expensive studio ns then spent loads promoting it and doing concerts how would you feel if loads of people downloaded it for free and you got nothing?

It's theft. So yes, it is wrong. In fact, it makes the person doing it a criminal.
And you can't claim you have "no money, seriously never" if you've spent ten thousand pounds on movies and music in 10 years. . ..

Yes, it still is. Take the Kantian approach; imagine if everybody in the world did the same thing you did.
In other words, if everybody downloaded it without ever paying, obviously there are problems.
