recently i had problems with my car. its a '98 rover 414.

whenever i put the clutch pedal to the floor in either reverse 1st 2nd or 3rd when it makes a crunching kind of sound and sounds like something is rattling. also if i drop down a gear to overtake or anything, when i push the throttle hard the car jumps forward and makes a crunching noise.

i think this is a clutch problem but need a second opinion, and if so what part of the clutch ?

any ideas on cost also ?

If it makes this noise with the engine off, and the tranny in neutral, it's the clutch.

If it only makes this noise with the engine running and under a load, it may be bad engine mounts, or a bad tranny.

Sounds like either the throwout bearing or the pressure plate or both. They are part of the internal clutch system, inside the bellhousing, and are not cheap either way. If you plan to do the work your self, they run in the area of 75 bucks for a kit which includes a friction plate with the other two, but I'm not sure on labor.

in an attempt to isolate the priority will we are saying its rain getting into the bell housing?possibly from the splash look after no longer refitted?the splash look after is formed like a cresent moon, produced from sheet steel.if its the bearing the rain might have washed the grease left the bearing dry and you will have a relentless noise,so it kinda factors to water entering into your friction disc, which wolud explane revs going up whilst velocity is going down
