The Boy in the Striped Pajamas ANYTHING by Jane Austen (Pride and Prejudice is best!) Atonement (not so much the movie) The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants series Diary of Anne Frank Flowers for Algernon Gone with the Wind Anne of Green Gables (and the rest of those books) The Wind in the Willows Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass Go ask Alice I know that some of these are easy reads but they're all good. :-) I do really like Harry Potter and Twilight series, but since you don't want them listed I won't!

If you haven't jumped on the bandwagon already, then the Harry Potter series. But otherwise I'd recommend Les Miserables, The Count of Monte Cristo, A Time to Kill by John Grisham, the Dune series by Frank Herbert (those are the ultimate non-cheesy sci fi books- Star Wars actually stole material from them).

East of Eden by John Steinbeck
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
The Crucible by Arthur Miller
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Life of Pi by Yann Martel
The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien
I'm a bit of a classic literature buff. The last two are more modern though.
