Overall no, however if the glass is thin enough there would not be a problem with some of the larger shark species. Even then most would not try due to how sensitive the nose/head/eye area of sharks are.

Honestly though the reason for the thicker glass in most aquariums is not because of the fish or whatever animal, it is because of the water. The weight behind "x" number gallons of water needs to be supported enough so it does not crack the plexi.

A shark can break through Plexiglas one inch thick, but not Plexiglas three feet thick. How do they know this? Well construction engineers know how much force and pressure a certain thickness of Plexiglas can withstand and zoologists, especially an ichthyologist (fish expert) knows how powerful sharks are. These people get together and make a determination. If the construction engineer is a complete expert, an architect, they should reach a rational conclusion between them. There are several hundred species of sharks and I assumed you meant the great white shark. I have two books on sharks so I can look up any shark question easily in my home library for you. I also have a DVD on sharks.
