This really is a very interesting question. To bottom-line it, the qualities a soldier must have are the ability to be led and not question authority, belief in why s/he is fighting, disassociation from the humanity of "enemies" in order to be able to kill, and a sense of superiority--that is, a belief that the way of life that the soldier lives is "more important" than the way of life of the "enemy." A soldier must also be willing to die for what s/he believes. As a singular essence, it would have to be, in my view, a willingness to kill and be killed.

feelings of sincere concern and compassion for our fellow Americans, The military code of "leave no man behind" insures a soldier that his sacrifice will be honored from the moment he dies on the battlefield and that his remains will be treated with the dignity and respect accorded a brother in arms. In every conflict there are examples of soldiers honoring these traditions, sometimes with their own lives. To me this is the essence ...soldiers are ...essensual for our future.....and the future of our children......

Well, there's "The (American - though any nationality could be substituted) Soldier's Creed", which seems - to me - to sum up the essence well:
"Soldier’s Creed
I am (an American) Soldier.
I am a Warrior and a member of a team.
I serve (the people of the United States), and live the (Army/Marine Corps) Values.
I will always place the mission first.
I will never accept defeat.
I will never quit.
I will never leave a fallen comrade.
I am disciplined, physically and mentally tough, trained and proficient in my warrior tasks and drills.
I always maintain my arms, my equipment and myself.
I am an expert and I am a professional.
I stand ready to deploy, engage, and destroy, the enemies of (the United States of America) in close combat.
I am a guardian of freedom and the (American) way of life.
I am an (American) Soldier.
