Myself I would stay with the XP.
If, you do want to upgrade be sure to check the compatibility of all your Hardware and Software to be sure they will work, upgrade or have Drivers available.
It looks like you have enough RAM and Hard Drive to install.
Most say 1 GB of RAM which, that really what you got. More RAM never hurts though.

HEY! I got thinking about you say Home Basic. You may want to read the Article I link to;

Be sure how long Support for your Vista will be. Just thought you may want to know. Microsoft may have more information on this.

For home basic, I don't think you should have any problems. There are a lot of hardware and software incompatibilities still...although they are slowly being resolved. Here is a handy link to check them.

If you were installing vista premium or anything like that, I would recommend more ram to allow the aero effects and the like. I'm running 2 gigs and haven't had any problems with it.

Keep in mind that there are a lot of complaints about slow speed and whatnot...I did experience some slowdown in regards to file copying and the like, but that slowly seems to increase speed with time. The file-indexing is great...it is so fast that most searches on my computer are done before I finish typing the query...but that seems to be offset by more hard drive usage and longer file copying, at least till the computer gets settled, so to speak.

Also, you may wish to eventually upgrade HD space. My windows folder by itself is 8 gigs or so....a lot of the programs and add ons and whatnot bulk up the HD space requirements.

Hope this helps.

Ive heard vista isnt compatable with all XP stuff yet. You should wait a year or two to update to vista so all the kinks and bugs can be worked out.

What is it, may I ask, that entices you people to buy a dell in the first place? If you wanna try Vista and its heart aches, go ahead....after all, you will, anyway.

You could try Dell support
http://support.dell.com
But I personaly would not because of your limited disk space.
