What effects did the establishment of colonial empires in the Americas and the dramatic increase in overseas trade and the world’s wealth have on Europe?

It put European countries in competition for domination of the seas and trade routes, as well as for colonies in the New World. Spain, France, and England were the main competitors with Portugal playing a minor role except in South America and some of the islands of the West Indies. The wealth of the colonies helped fill the coffers of those countries and further increased their need to compete with each other.
