Evolution has programmed our brains to find patterns in nature. This allows us to predict the behaviour of the world around us. This tendency sometimes leads us to find connections between events where no causal relationship actually exists. Examples are seeing a face in the clouds or a water stain on a ceiling - we're hard wired to recognise human faces. Astrology is superstition - like walking under a ladder and then the next day you're late for an important meeting. Some people see the connection as being realted through bad "luck".
In ancient societies, one of the few things that was stable and predictable was the cyclical passing of time - the seasons, planets, stars in the sky. It was not too much of a leap for ancient man to assume that there was a causal relationship between the position of the stars in the sky and what was happening down here on Earth (to some degree, this is true, but the only heavenly bodies of any consequence are the Sun and Moon and their relationship with tides and the seasons).
This belief in the stars has carried on to modern times. If you are told that something will happen because it's written in the stars, there are a couple of ways this may come about: either coincidence, or you do something that makes it happen. People are very selective and remember the times when someone said something would happen, but tend to forget when it doesn't. If you took a selection of newspaper astrology columns and hid the actual Zodiac sign, it is likely that any one could apply to you. Similarly for personality traits, etc. They are quite vague.
Astrology isn't really based in fact and the question I would ask is "do I want to have some control in my life, or am I at the mercy of the stars?" If all we're doing is following a script that was written billions of years ago when these bodies formed, that's a pretty bleak view of life and doesn't say much for free will.

They don't. The gravitational force from a passing bus has more influence on you than Jupiter.
