were purchased at a radio shack, and the sprint store itself. Do I take my car in to have it looked at? It's a 06 Pontiac G6. What could possibly be wrong?

sounds like there is a problem with your car. it seems there is a problem with your cigarette lighter circuit. i would guess that the circuit has a short to ground.

take it in to a shop. or get out a dvom meter and check the circuit

In my opinion, you can safely increase the fuse size by 50% ampere rating and not damage your circuit. That means if the fuse you have now is 5 Amps, I would install an 8 Amp fuse. You could also experiment with using a 5 or 8 Amp "slo-blow" fuse. Then if the fuse still blows, that means you've got an actual overload fault in your charger if it's designed to work on a 5 Amp circuit. Also, don't forget that something else could be drawing current simultaneously on the same circuit and using say 2 Amps. That means there's only 3 Amps of capacity left before the 5 Amp fuse blows, and your charger may need a full 5 Amps itself. Fuses are much cheaper in tha auto parts stores than in a Radio Shack store in my experience.

Basically the cell phone charger is based on SMPS (Switched Mode Power supply) and contains capacitor. When you plug in to the power source, the capacitor tries to charge and draws more current initially. This might cause your fuse blow. You may check whether you have "slow blow fuse" (slow blow fuse normally don't blow during short period of over current or check your capacitor is overrated (more MFD.. Micro Farad) or don't have current limiting circuitry.

try a higher amperage fuse. 15 amp.
