I have 2 Altec Lansing speakers and a subwoofer. I just replaced my older Altecs (with no sub). Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

Many Altec Lansings are somewhat famous for, while having incredible audio-quality, also being unshielded from interference. Get it farther away from any wireless routers, wireless cards, anything producing a magnetic field, or anything similar that you think could cause it.

Take the speakers back and ask them to plug them into another computer to verify whether they generate static. If the speakers generate static on the other computer then you have bad speakers (connector, wire, speaker), and they should replace them for you.

Another possibility is that you have something interfering with the speakers such as an electric fan or some other electronic device, fluorescent lamp, etc.

Last thought is the media. If you are playing from a cd maybe it is damaged, or the media file is corrupt.

That could be from the power lines in your area. I am in an old building and when the hydro company does things, I get static on my phones and everything else. Even it the powerline is not into my building.
