How would you calculate the height of two people using feet and inches? Or should I convert it to centimetres, get the average, and then convert it back to feet and inches?

No, just convert it all to inches. For example, say someone is 5'6" and 5'4"

5*12=60
60+6=66 inches

5*12=60
60+4=64 in

66+64=130
130/2=65

Good luck

if you're struggling with the mod 12 math, convert both heights to inches and take the average. then convert back to feet/inches by dividng by 12, the integer portion (to the left of the decimal point) is feet. multiply this by twelve and subtract it from the average. the difference is the reminder in inches.

Converting to centimeters is fine, but a bit strange... you might as well convert to miles or any other random unit.

To put it all in terms of feet just take number of feet + number of inches/12. Then just add the values together and divide by two.

whatever you convert it into, make sure that they all have the same units.. you can't find the average with feet AND inches, you could change the feet into inches and add on the existing inches before you find the average

**just remember to change it back to the units already given (feet and inches)**

.Also, you could convert feet to inches for the calculation.

Centimeters or inches, whichever you are more comfortable with.

There are 2.54 centimeters per inch and 12 inches per foot.

You need to get the heights into one unit of measure to calculate the average. Using centimeters is good idea.
