Where does it root from?

Mirtle. My brother shortened it to "Mir" (pronounced "mer") but then realised that it was spelt the same way as the knackered (and now non-existent) Russian space station, so lengthened it back to Mirtle. "Because it rhymed with "turtle"".
He is now an astronomer.
I'm sure lots of other people have similar stories....

Jim. When I was a baby my parents had a very busy caf (definitely not a cafe) and the rest of the road was made up of Peabody Trust flats where someone baby minded me during the busy periods. At that time a comedian called Jimmy Edwards was popular on radio and TV, and a frequent one liner from his shows was "come back from the flats Jim" - hence my family nickname of Jim.

JuJu..my niece could not say Jennifer so it just came out juju one day and all the other babies call me that..everyone actually from my grandparents, parents, and even my husband. Every now and then someone calls me Jenn-bug because I use to have a bf that called me that so it was my screen name for a looong time.
