I'd look for better quality than Petco, at an independently owned store.
Platies are very easy to breed and a lot of fun. We breed some of our own "in house" and we use this Penn Plax breeder http://www.pennplax.com/Images/AQUAscans/Breeding/AN2AquaNursery.jpg
trap to keep the mother away from the babies, or she will eat them.
There are other good ones from Lee's and Hagen.
Be ready with "baby food"...

guppies are the easiest to breed. Just be carful that the moms and dads dont make babies with their children, otherwise they could get some genetic problems.
If you have a bigger tank with a lot of plants and rocks and a good filter you can breed other fish too. In my tank my catfish (ancistrus) started breeding without me ever doing anything. Mollies and platys breed without laying eggs too. Petco has guppies, mollies platys and catfish. I wouldnt buy fish that are pregnant already, but sometimes you just cant tell, because they dont have a big belly yet. The males are usually more colorful, but you can just go to the store and say you would like a male and a female and they pick them out for you. Now a healthy fish is big(grown up), fast, and doesnt have any icky stuff on him, like broken fins, cloudy eyes or broken scales.

Guppies are one of the easiest freshwater fish to keep and breed and tell male from female. The males are the ones with the brighter colors and the longer, flowing, prettier tails. The females are a little blander colored and have shorter tails. Also the males have a pointier bottom fin near their backside (called a gonopodium) while the female's is a fan shape and she has a dark "gravid spot" just beyond the curve of her belly, which is rounder than the males, even when she's not pregnant. You can buy guppies pretty cheaply from most pet shops and will often get a female that is already pregnant.
The thing with breeding guppies is that there are so many different variations in color and tail shape that it's fun to try to breed for the kind you want. If you decide to keep and raise guppies, check out www.guppies.com for a ton of interesting and useful information.

As others have pointed out Guppies, Platys, Mollies and Swordtails are all very simple to breed and are almost always pregnant when you buy them. They are also all livebearers and therefore have live births of babies.
If you are looking for a simple to breed egg laying fish, convict cichlids or zebra danios are the easiest egg layers to handle. I'll include a link on how each of those fish breed and the care of the fry.
I also agree with a previous poster that suggested you find a higher quality supplier of fish if you want to breed fish. Not only will this give you better breeding stock it will also help you out when you need a place to trade in or sell the babies as Petco and similar large chain stores cannot take your young fish from you.

Breeding Zebra danio:

Hope that helps and best of luck with your breeding efforts.

Gey Kenyii cichlids, male are orange while female are blue with stripes running down their body, tgats the most obvious way to tell a gender of a fish.
Don't look for already pregnant fish, the babies might not be healthy under the conditions of the tank in petco, affecting them in their egg form.
Also, you would miss the beautiful mating activities of the parents.

If you are new to breeding fish, I would suggest starting with guppies. They are really easy to take care of, and you will know the difference between males and females. Males have beautifully colored tails, and females are really dull and they dont have much color.
If you want to breed guppies, you need at least a tank that is 5 gallons or more. Get the same number of males as the number of females. If you go with a 5 gallon tank, I would suggest 4 males with 4 females.
When you have your tank established, You should get a breeding net (ask a pet store employee that works in the fish department). Choose your mast beautiful male and a healthy female and put them in the breeding net (which will hang inside the water or your aquarium, on the side). After a couple days, you will see the female getting fatter, this is when you need to take the male out. In about a week she will give birth to her babies ALIVE WITHOUT EGGS! Guppies are known as livebearers, and they give birth to there fish alive. Take the female out of the breeding net as soon as you see babies. Feed the babies FINELY CRUSHED flake food after about 3 days after they are born. When the babies are about an inch long, you can start selling them or giving them to friends.

Another good fish to breed that are ALSO livebearers are swordtails. You will need at least a ten gallon tank, with plenty of plants and breeding grass (ask store employee) Make sure there are lots of plants because, just like guppies, they are not afraid to eat there young. It would be good to start with 2 males and 4 females. (Males have the "sword" shaped tails, females don't)
Males and females are usually put together in the same tank at the pet store, and females are usually already pregnant, but you should still get males just in case. One cool thing about females is that they have a pouch to hold the male's seimen, so they can have babies over and over again, without a male.
When you have your fish in your tank, wait about 1 week and if you look closely, you will start seeing babies appearing at the bottom of the tank (once again, wake sure you have lots of plants for them to hide in!) occasionally one may swim up and get eaten by an adult, but it is the way of life. Within a coulpe months, those that survive will become adult sized, and ready to sell. If you want to keep more babies, get the breeding net, and every couple of weeks, pull the plants up and run your aquarium net through the whole tank, this will alow you to catch alot of the babies. Then put then in the breeding net.

Guppies are pretty good and hardy and easy to breed.
Heres the difference between them two :-
male - http://www.aquarticles.com/images/Guppies/01%20Male%20Guppy.jpg
female - http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/livebearers/images/fe_guppy_s.jpg
they are both the same kind and there is also many other different types of guppies. So lots of colour.
And if you are looking for males look for one with a generally big body and un-nipped tail and preferally big tail. And for females a big one too. You can buy the pregnant fish but if you want a particaular strain of guppy fry i would not buy pregnant ones.
hope this helps :D

Guppies and other livebearers are the most well know best breeeder. Male guppies tend to have a pointed anal fin and also folded rather than the female's regular looking anal fin.

This link should tell you how to breed guppies and stuff about breeding.

Guppies.
All you have to do is put them together and they will definitely breed.
You can find them at Petco.
To tell the difference between to male and females, male have much longer fins.
When you notice a female looking fat put her in a separate tank.
When she gives birth take her out and put her back in her original tank, so she doesn't eat the babies.
