oh heck yeah....you can learn many things this way...informal eating habits...but most importantly the "priss" factor. If they freak over an ant or walking through a bit of mud, dump their butt.

It depends on the girl. I am married, but if I was still dating, I would think that any girl who would want to go on a picnic or on a hike for a first date would be a keeper. Those are the kind of dates I like. These activities are more informal and relaxed and usually make it easier to get to know the other person more in depth.

Depends on the person. Personally I would like it, but maybe not for a first date, unless you already know the person would enjoy it. Dinner is best for first dates. A picnic and hike would be good if the first date went well. I think a picnic and hike is a little more intimate so better for a second date.

This would be the ideal first date to me. I like getting to know others through a shared activity, and it would be even better if there were 2 or 3 others along (to take pressure off of being a "twosome" right off the bat.)

It has all sorts of benefits--you can tell how chivalrous a guy is, how well the other person responds to adversity, how fit they are (in a general way) , and more than anything it's an informal setting much more like real life than a fancy restaurant or club.

Picnic, yes. Hike, no.
First dates should allow for a good bit of face to face time to see if you actually get along and to get to know each other. Activities that do not allow a good bit of opportunity to "connect" should be saved for later. Save the movies for later, too. If you want to "hike", how about do a leisurely walk through the park instead--that way, you can still chit chat.
