No it's not ideal, but nothing on this earth is ideal.
But there is there are also many versions of democracy.
Canadian (British) style democracy doesn't allow for 1 man to have too much power (veto power) he is only the leader of the party and can be voted out if he loses popular support
Canadian style democracy also allows you to stay in office as long as you do a good job in the eyes of the people. A limited term means you don't have to try as hard after 4 years and 1 day.
(without term limits you might still have Clinton as president and defiantly no war in Iraq and the terrorist training ground it has become)
American presidents have too much power, which allows for a mini dictator inside a democracy.

Yes, but not all forms of democracy.
Pure democracy is too in-efficient. A representative democracy such as we have in the US is far more effective.
Without getting too much into the phylosophy behind why democracy is so effective, let's look at some basic facts.
1. The longest standing government IN THE WORLD right now is the United States government. It has not changed since 1789 when the US Constitution was ratified.
2. 27 of the 30 richest countries in the WORLD are representative democracies. (By per capita GDP)
(I included countries like the U.K. - who call themselves monarchies, but since the monarch has almost no power and all of the power lies with the elected parlament and prime minister, its really more of a democracy).
3. Democracies are the fastes growing type of government in the world. (For instance in 1800 there was only one democracy, in 1972, there were 45, in 1990 there were 60, today there are 87 democratic nations. )
4. Democacies as a rule enjoy a much higher standard of living than in non-democratic nations.
5. 86% of the world wealth is controlled by the by democracies who make up less than half of the world population. The U.S. allone controls 29% of the worlds wealth.
6. The highest mortality rates are in general in democracies.
7. People in democracies are generally free.

No
Americans have proven in the last 7 years, that the fallacy of Democracy is that "the people" are waaaay too stupid to govern themselves.
Democracy is also too slow and contentious for real progress to take place.
In fact in America it is the extreme urgency of war (WWI &II) which has accounted for most of its success, and they were always the last to do the right thing, which has accidentally been a great advantage.
China, which shunned Democracy, and where in 50 short years a billion+ people have risen from common peasantry to world super-economic power, has shown that the Democracy isn't necessary.
What works better is public-spirited dictatorship.
When was the last time the USA achieved something like the Yang-Tze dam, in their own country for their own people?
Answer:Not since FDR, the socialist dictator.
It could never get done in America today.

There are many that would argue for Democracy, but what I have studied and experienced about it, shows that it is not an opportunity to provide equality among the masses.
Only those that are fortunate to have education and money left to them through rich families who prospered during better economic years, are benefitting from such a ideal.

NO! A democracy is 2 lions and a lamb voting on what to have for dinner.
