I would say Raleigh, NC. I lived in Phoenix and it's way to hot now and you have to love the desert. I would actually prefer the Carolina's, better year round climate and you don't have to worry about all those biting and stinging desert critters...

Phoenix is close enough to the Grand Canyon, Vegas, Hoover Dam. Lots of stuff to see.
