There is another issue here too. Do you know that it is illegal to take an American car to Mexico and leave it there? You must get a Mexican car permit (cost about $100.00) as soon as you cross the border if you are driving more than 12 miles into Mexico. At that time you must present a valid credit card. They take a record of that credit card, and when you leave Mexico , if you are not taking the car withyou, they charge a $400.00 fine to your card. It is extremely difficult to nationalize an american car in Mexico...it must be more than 10 years old. If the purpose of your trip is to give the car to a friend or family member in Mexico, it would probably be better for that person to come to the border to get the car. Ido not know details, but I am told there are car brokers at the border who can help you with this process. Maybe someone else on answers can help you with more info on this.

I don't know for sure but let me tell you this. I drove to and from Mexico in September 2001 and they didn't ask to see anything other than driver's license. You can call any travel agent and they will have the correct answer to your question however. If you are a AAA member they would know.

Even though you are going in car, you will still need to use your passport. They won't let you use a birth certificate anymore.
