He was NEVER Lincoln's Vice President. Hannibal Hamlin was and then Andrew Johnson. Pierce, a native of New Hampshire, was a southern sympathizer, but he never played a major role in advocating for the South. His position was that he was a strong states rights advocate. Thus his views on that matter were quite in keeping with southern democrats at the time.
