We have a 2 1/2 year old female lab. She is currently in heat. We are thinking we would like to breed her. When and how do we do this. She is registered and we are also looking for a registered male lab. We live in IL.

Step 1 find a mentor breeder - this is so important that you should delay all else till you have a mentor. Your going to have to wait till next heat anyway because its almost impossible to get a stud on such short notice (especally if you haven't already got her hips & eyes checked) - I know stud owners that would turn you down BECAUSE you waited till she's in heat- and few who would allow theire stud near an untested female

First, before anything, think of why you want to breed her. For cash? For "fun"? Can you provide a good home for these pups either with you or someone else? Do you realize there is a chance you could lose your dog during all this if there is a complication? Are you willing to take this risk?
There are a lot of dogs in animal shelters that really need homes, you are just putting these pups in homes that those poor dogs could have had.

Anyways, that's just something to think about.
You can put an ad in your newspaper or trader asking for a male for stud service or look on the interenet and see if there are any available in your area. Look on google and type in Dog Breeding. This should help.

There are thousands of labs dying in shelters every day. Why would you breed a dog that is so overpopulated already? Not to mention that registered doesn't mean anything, unless she's a champion show dog you have no business breeding her. Breeding is dangerous, she could die or her pups could during birth, and the longer she goes unspayed the higher her chances of dying of reproductive cancers. You ought to spay her and let her live in peace as a loving pet.

Why would you want to breed her? Humane Societies are full of great dogs who are looking for a home, yes even pure breed labs.

You should do a lot more research about breeding animals.
Wait until her next heat cycle and educate yourself in the mean time, please.

dont wait until your pet comes in heat before trying to find a stud. now you'll be under the gun. maybe get one in mind and wait til next time. once she starts to bleed, its about a week before she's fertile.

PLEASE Don't look online for answers. There's too much BS out there. Please do it right and sit down and talk with your vet about this. They'll give you the correct and useful information. And they'll know breeders in their practice or have some to recommend.
