I don't know who told you that the 8500 is faster than the 8600.

The 8600 is designed to be a mid level graphics card and costs about $150. The 8500 is designed to be a budget level graphics card and costs about $90.

Just based on features, clock speed, and pipelines, it's clear that the 8600 is faster.

The number that denote the name of the graphic card, 8500, 8600, 8800 reflects the performance of the graphic card in relative to each other

The larger the number is, the better the performance is compare to the one with a smaller number. Simple as that.

8600GT is the better one in terms of performance.

Obviously the 8600 is better - generally a bigger bandwidth and you should get faster framerates than the 8500. However, it depends what you're going to be using it for - I only really play World of Warcraft and my 8600GT is definite overkill!
