The moon causes the tides of the ocean. The tides help animals to live and brings cool things up to the beach for us to see.The moon also helps us to see at night.

The moon wasn't really intended to have a purpose. The moon might not have been created at all.
The moon was suspected to be created about when the earth was still a moltem mass orbiting around a new star. A Mars-sized object was thoguht to hit earth, making a massive portion of earth fly into space. This fell into orbit and became the moon.
So the moon's creation was a chance happening. If interplanetary conditions were right, there might not have been a moon. But there is, and because of it's existance, it just happens to reflect light into earth at night and cause the tides

No one can answer, "What is the purpose of the Moon" any more than they can answer "What is the purpose of life?" You can ask, "What tasks does the moon accomplish?" You may answer, "To raise and lower the tides.....to provide light during night time or to provide a possible place for an Earth mining colony.....or a beautiful object that poets can write love poems about."

The moon was once a part of the earth that was knocked off when an unknown planetoid slammed into it when the earth wad still molten millions of years ago. The moon acts as a secondary gravitational pull besides the sun, causing tides and more, do research.

"Purpose" implies it was deliberately placed there or has some form of consciousness. It wasn't and it hasn't.
The most recent theory is that the Moon was formed as a result of a collision between the Earth and a large meteorite billions of years ago which ejected vast quantities of rock into space which began orbiting the Earth and gradually coalesced into one body - The Moon.
The Moon does have effects on the Earth, most notably a strong gravitational interraction which causes the tides.
[just love the answer below: "The Sun, on the other hand, has no purpose, since it provides light during the day when it's light anyhow". Well where do you think the light during the day comes from if not the Sun??? Now repeat after me... duh! Duh!! DUH!!!]

Its part of the Earth that was broken off when the earth was forming and has cooled like the earth and stayed in orbit ever since. And by the way it doesn't shine it reflects light from the sun

Not really a purpose, but a couple of the things that it does that help out life on earth......
1. it influences the ocean's tides which in turn influence the earth's weather patterns and
2. it also is a major reason that the earth spins on the stable axis that it does which in turn gives us our seasons.

the moon has no specific purpose it just happened to end up in orbit around the earth, we should be grateful for this, the night just would not be the same without the moon.

I am not an astronomer. The moon causes tidal waves. The moon was probably captured by the earth and became its satellite several million years ago. The earth and the moon pull each other.
