My brother wants to buy a really basic laptop, for use at home only. He needs it for office and internet (wireless). Minimum spend. What specs should he aim for and any particular recommendations? Any brands to avoid? He really wants to spend as little as possible. Thanks

I think PC world have a really good deal on with Toshiba laptops at the moment... Brand wise, if he can find good deals on HP, Sony, Toshiba, etc I would go for it. There is only 1 brand that I would not buy, and that is Dell - have had some nasty experiences with them and their after sales support...stay away!!

I would advise him not to buy second hand either, unless he knows about laptops etc, which I would guess he doesn't - more hassle than it is worth!

DON'T BUY DELL, if you upset the lepracorns inside you will regret buying it and dell won't help you lol. Don't buy packard bell or advent which are packard bell. Don't believe the idiot above who said acer's are crap, he probably dropped his or spilt his tea on it.

We have 2 acer's in our family and both are fantastic machines. My son's was over £600 last year and is now available from comet at £430 and it's dual core which he uses for web design.

I was that impressed with his that I bought a basic machine for £400 and was the best £400 I have spent. Mt machine is the 3692 which still comes with xp at ebuyer.

See both links below. Hp's and toshiba's are good too but please stay away from the 3 brands I mentioned and DON'T buy one off ebay.

I would suggest to go for an Acer Laptop with Minimum Wireless configuration. The guy at the Computer Hardware store would guide you on the deal spot on :).

The $599 Acer, with 1 gig memory and Windows Home Basic. That is enough to access the internet.

For a six twelve months previous, the main inexpensive obtainable will suffice. the possibility of it being broken by twist of destiny is merely too large to speculate any large wealth in a severe overall performance gadget, additionally, youthful clientele would have much less desire for best overall performance. the main basic laptops in recent times will play video games and DVD's.

Look at a low end Dell, just make sure it has at least 1 GB ram and a wireless card. Also tell him to get the extended warranty. Once it is out of warranty it will be a throw away item.

anything but a dell will do, i'm partial to gateway since got this one. dell's support is pratically useless as none of their tech's have english as a native language. all they know is how to read the windows help files.

Shop by price, then brand name. Acer and HP/CompaQ are very reasonable.
