Eventually the expanding particles of the universe will reach a limit, like an expanding balloon, and then begin to retract.

Eventually they will smash together, and then reexplode in another big bang

Astronomers are actually saying the universe is expanding. Each passing moment, galaxies move farther away from each other. But there are theories of the "Big Crunch".
