Everyone forgot to mention that the driving standard is also very low, its all most people can do to stay somewhere near their lane.
Driving without a licence or insurance is incredibly common in this area, as is drinking and driving.
If you get hit on a bike its your fault for not driving an SUV,
Oh, and the majority are fat, lazy, superstitious and stupid
(God is my co-driver bumper sticker, then, cutting across 4 lanes, stopping in middle of interstate to read map, reading newspapers while driving, etc.)

I would say that cars are being built as cars were being invented and produced. So they could manufacture the roads to the car. Overseas the cities came first so no way were they going to move buildings and roads just for cars. The city has too much history to move anything. So people bought vespas and that was that. Can go anywhere, town city, up to the countryside and up hills n mountains. So what if it isn't fast, aren't showcased in rap videos, and of course there not pushed as they are here. Watch a comemrcail for a SUV, or what I used to call MINIVANS or STATION Wagons and watch how many pot shots it takes against car drivers , and how they claim to be safer then cars. And of course who had the most safety awards from the IIHS but cars like Vokswagen Beetle. That had the best scores for the first couple of years it came out.

Because most Americans love their big gas guzzling SUV's and pick-up trucks and apparently don't mind spending $3.50 for a gallon of gasoline. There's also a lot of road rage over here so, the bigger the vehicle you have, the more intimidating you are to other motorist.
Another thing to think about, is the amount of physical energy that would be expended riding a bike as opposed to driving a car. Most "super-sized" Americans are not that keen on physical activity these days.

I think (dirty jerzee) has a handle on it. Also, Europeans and Japanese had their manufacturing destroyed in WWII and there was a need for cheap transportation. We never experienced that here. Instead, we became status whores, using a huge truck to haul one kid to a soccer game.

Because of the stigma that they are so dangerous and will kill you, perpetuated by ignorant soccer moms and teenagers on literbikes who prove them partially correct.
The other thing is that, realistically, they take more attention to ride correctly and more time to learn, and most Americans are fat, lazy morons who want instant gratification and won't work for something if they can help it.

Plus, you can lug a bunch of junk around in a car, and leave junk in there, and sleep in a car, and it doesn't snow in a car, and you can carry on conversations with passengers in a car, and you can carry multiple passengers in a car, and...
