A silent moment is nothing to be embarrassed about.

Tell you what - here is a story that really happened that you can break the ice with. My most embarrassing restaurant moment took place in a relatively pricy Chinese restaurant. For an appetizer, we had ordered a PooPoo tray. Now, this item was placed on my left on the corner of the table and the waiter subsequently lit it. It was maybe about a foot high - with a flame going at the top.

While looking at the menu, I was of course concerned about burning my then long hair so I held the menu to my left. Waiter comes to take our order. Now I had noticed smoke and a higher flame at the top of the menu but paid no attention to it as I thought it was normal - given the flame at the top of the PooPoo tray. That is - until the waiter started flipping out as I had actually set the blasted menu on fire. It was a big menu btw.

And I am a brunette.

At least I didn't burn my hair!

You know, there doesn't always have to be something being said every minute you are dining out. Maybe the other person had something to say but is so focused on chewing their food 40 times they cant say anything yet.

Just relax, if things get quiet for a couple seconds don't freak out. Once you freak out you start doing silly/wierd/stupid things. Just count to 10, look around the room, and make a comment about someone else's cloths, dinner, plates, whatever. Or just bring up something that happened to you that day.

Awkward silence
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
In a social conversation, an awkward silence might occur when momentarily, no one has anything to say.

Many people go to great lengths to avoid awkward silences, or choose comedy as a way to break the silence. This typically takes the form of saying "awkward silence" or performing a hand motion such as the "awkward turtle" or the "awkward cow" etc.

Another common gag, is when such a silence comes up, commenting that "Every time there's an awkward silence a gay baby is born." Inevitably, another awkward silence follows, causing the speaker to declare, "Twins."

Yes, I know how to reduce the risk of occurrence of these moments: it is by preparing yourself in advance. Before going out with your friend or supervisor, find out:
a) what he/she likes and dislikes.. ask around
b) some of her/his personal views about specific topics such as health (use of natural medicine etc)
c) Learn something about a country she/he has visited. Ask him/her openly about issues in that country. People like to talk about this.
d) Watch the news and comment on the recent events reported
These are truly "life saviors" in case this situation occurs. Being silent reflects lack of imagination and you cannot afford having that image.
Always: pretend to be interested, no matter what he/she is saying. Challenge your brain and ask questions, give your personal views. Practice these techniques at home.

Always have some ideas in your head of what you are going to talk about if conversation slows. even if it seems like you had thought about the topics before the conversation, the people you are dining with will appreciate the good natured planning.

Say something very pleasant to everyone, where others can supply rejoinders, and suddenly, the ball is rolling, conversation is back in good cheer! weather related topics help; so do some harmless jokes, some humour that does not fall flat! (silence for a few short seconds, is not bad either!)

For myself depends on who are the one i dinning out with. Let say if the person that you dinning out with, is the one that you don't like or not the same personality, for me this embarrasing moment will appear. But never mind, maybe you can talk something about yourself or ask something about that person.

That has happened a couple of times.

I ALWAYS ask them a "what if" question!
It alwaaaays breaks the ice.....er... or tension, LoL

Like, What if it was customary to walk sideways?
What if ... everyone had to scan their thumb print when they walked in to a store?

Doesn't matter what the "what if" is...
the question is just to get them thinking and obviously they will end up talking.
