Platelet problems are related to bone marrow problems. There are several possible causes, some serious.
Among the serious causes are leukemia, lymphoma, HIV, lupus, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, and hemolytic-uremic syndrome. The platelet count being low can cause bruising, which might resemble a blue rash, because small internal injuries do not clot properly. If the cause is HIV, the blue rashes could be Kaposi's sarcoma, a rare cancer associated with being elderly and Jewish, or having HIV.
Taking certain drugs, including heparin, some antibiotics, and aspirin, can lower platelet count. So can overconsumption of alcohol, which will damage the bone marrow, where the platelets are manufactured.
