Naming characters is fun, but have a bit of caution. Don't give everyone an exotic name or one with non-standard spelling. Your readers will trip over the names every time they are written and it will slow down the pace of the story. Sometimes Sue and Bob are excellent names because they are so common.
By the same token, try not to have characters whose names start with the same letter unless there is a darn good reason for it (such as red herrings in a mystery. CF is found scrawled in blood and you have six characters with those initials.)
If you DO have a reason to use the same initial letters, make the words sound different so readers can keep the characters straight in their mind.
With the CF example, you could have Carl Freund, Caitlan Ferguson, Carol Faye Samuels (hey, the F may not be a last name :) ), Cissy Ferguson (Caitlan's sister), and Cyril Farmer. The switch between C words that use the K sound and those that use the S sound make the names more distinct. Adding and subtracting syllables helps to keep the names from blurring together, too.
With that said, baby name books are a great inspiration to writers. Not only do they list names you've never thought about, they give the meaning of the name.
Perhaps you want a character who doesn't fit into normal society, is a bit uncouth and loud, a regular Barbarian. What name means Barbarian? Got it -- Barbara.
Or there is a little girl who is always sunshine, who brightens your day. You think of her as a flower, but don't want an obvious flower name like Rose or Daisy. Did you know the Slavic word for tulip is Lala (pronounced Lay-la)?
Stop by the local library and browse a few name books. Seems like the Dewey number is 929.44 but I could be off by digit or two.

Baby name books are particularly good if you are looking for meaning in a name or the history of one. I use them heavily when I am doing a period piece because names do come in and out of fashion or use with the decades.
However, I also really like this Random Name Generator I found online a while back. It is http://www.xtra-rant.com/gennames/ Give it a try. It helps me come up with names for my secondary characters and helps me avoid putting too much thought into the names. Plus, it will do first and last names. I hope this helps.

i always support novelists. im writing a book, too! here are the names i could think of:
GIRLS: Isabel, Serena, Sabina, Julie, Mimi, Alexis, Natalie, Milan, Claire . . .
BOYS: Austin, Landon, Clyde, Bryce . . .
it doesn't really matter if you have the "best" or most "unusual" names. the characters and their personality carry the names. like, if you name a really fabulous character in your book of a simple name like just "Anna," she'd carry it well (of course, with the way you write and narrate it) and suddenly it becomes a fabulous name. if you want a list of a thousand names, check out my sources. lots of luck! ♥
