Common knowledge says that you are supposed to win at home. The one with home advantage before the series starts is normally the favorite. I believe in playoffs any win helps regardless of where you are, but an old saying is that (since you are expected...in a way...to win at home) "the series doesn't start until someone wins away." I think the biggest effect is winning away.

I think the three games played so far in the Stanley Cup finals showed how big of an impact winning at home is.
It's basically two-way influence, the Ducks feeded of the crowd in the first two games and played better and with more energy than the Senators did in those games which got the crowd more involved. They won both games at home which is a good receipe and it also gives them a 2-0 lead in the series.
The sens had to win game 3 and they feeded of the crowd in my opinion as well as they came back three times from a deficit to finally put the game away in the 3rd period. After last night, the momentum shifted a little more back to the Sens but the Ducks still have the series lead. Game 4 will be a very important game for both, but just a little more for the Sens because they are at home and are down 1 game.
Basically winning on the road is nice and will help you win cups, but winning at home is necessarry in order to have a chance to even have a chance in any series.

For the Sens it was huge. On a normal occasion though it doesnt have that big of an effect. Teams are expected to win at home, its the away games that can make or break a team. If a team wins there home games and has a split away in the first 4 games, its the split that really gets the team going.

Well, winning anywhere is important, particularly at this time of the year.
Home teams usually win about 60+ percent of the time, I think. So, when a team wins at home it is doing what it is supposed to do. When it wins on the road, it has stolen a game.
In this case, if the Ducks win their home games, they win the Cup. The Sens need to hold serve at home and steal one on the road.

A series does not start until the home team loses. It is great winning on home ice in front of your fans. But winning on the road feels alittle sweeter.

For the Ducks it is huge. They have yet to win any away games in any Stanley Cup Final they have been in (2003 & 2007), but yet they have won every home game they have played in the Finals. This year they have home-ice advantage though.
I do believe whoever wins an away game first this year will win the cup.
