plants will grow toward the sun. it sounds as though your basil was never turned, so new growth was toward the sunny side. simply plant it so that the top is turned away from the sun and it should straighten itself out.
staking is ok when it is to keep growth off the ground - like tomatoes - but it will not help your basil.
pinch the flowers off. that is when the plant is trying to set seed at maturity. setting seed means that the plant is toward the end of its productive life...so by pinching the flower heads off the basil will continue to grow and have new leaves. it will keep blooming, so you will need to keep pinching them off. i aways keep mine growing till the fall and then i allow it to bloom, as the blooms are nice.
also you can cut the stems back to where side stems are growing...several inches back down the main stem...and you will get a lot of new growth. if you put the basil in a paper bag and microwave it for a few seconds, it will dry and you will have it all winter.
hope this helps.

Sounds like it was either in a pot too small and got to leaning because it got too tall for the container, or it was leaning towards the sunlight. Either way, this should correct itself now that you've planted it permanently. Is it outside or inside? Staking it is a good idea, though it shoudl correct itself in a short period of time. You might want to pinch the flowers, as once herbs start to flower, the foilage growth tends to slow down considerably. Pinching the flower off will encourage leaf growth. If it's inside your home, turn the pot regularly to keep the plant from leaning towards the light.
