One your laptop need to had a wireless card either built in or one your attach in a slot, And two, you need to pick up on a hotspot, which maybe difficult while your driving. But some of the places you stop at to eat and hotels may have wireless access.

Purchase a wireless access card and contract from a provider that covers both thte USA and Canada.
insert in laptop, install software, have fun on the trip.

Assuming your laptop has WiFi, most hotels & Motels offer free internet access.
Ask them about it when you register.
