Just a shot in the dark, but I'm guessing the display isn't functioning. You'll need to provide more details about the issue, though. I've dealt with Dell notebooks before at one of my old jobs, so I may be able to help you out. If you want, shoot me an IM with some more details and I'll see what I can do for you.

Is the battery charged? Sounds silly but most laptops need a bit of a charge even if on the mains adaptor.
Can you hear any fans when you press the 'on' button? Any lights coming on?
Last resort... Call Dell. If the laptop is out of warranty, call your local repair shop and ask for an estimate.
Good luck

First, try charging it over night and then try the next morning. If something's out of charge it needs to be charged!
If it's hibernating, try opening up the computer and pressing the enter key. That may do it.
If none of these things work, than I'd suggest either reading the manual that comes with it (if there is one.) Or, I'd call up Dell. They can probably explain what to do over the phone!
Good Luck! ;)

That happened to my Dell Inspiron 6400, I think it's a hard drive failure.
My Uncle fixed mine, as he is a computer man.
But I'd call Dell if I were you. You can get your stuff back, don't worry.
If it was just in hibernate or standby, it comes back on when you turn it on, so it's probably not that.

It's gone into Hibernate mode.
RTFM.
Read the Dell User Manual.
