I have an HP Pavillion Laptop. I was working on it and the screen just went black. You can faintly see the screen, but it is incredibly dark. I contacted HP and one person said that it may be a video adapter and one said I needed a whole new LCD at the cost of $600. When I hook the computer up to my external monitor it works fine. Also, I live in Japan and HP is giving me the run around about fixing it because I originally bought it in the USA. I also was told it could be the back light. Does anyone know if it is the back light, about how much it will cost to fix. Or if there are any other suggestions of what it could be? Thanks.

could be connections, inverter, back light or LCD mostly.
before replacing new LCD, detach the old one, clean connectors and hook up again, then use meter to check continous output of inverter.

I just came across a site that sends you a laptop for free! I'm ordering mine right now, it's a Sony VAIO and it looks really hot!
