The Americans tend to emphasise the "r" letter in any word by rolling their tongue. This letter is silent when the British pronounces words with this letter. Not sure why but I think the British way of pronounciation sounds more formal or regal. Just listen to how Simon Cowell talks as compared to Paula Abdul and Ryan Seacrest and you will know what I mean.

the position of your tongue dictates the accent that you have this accent is learnt from the phonetical language sounds you hear as a child or young person, your accent can change if you live in another country long enough, but other wise you are stuck with it for life.

Just in case you where interested American english has evovled from british english, therefore some would argue that the britsh speak the correct or proper form of this language. how ever if you wish to know the difference procure an British english dictionary and an American english dictionary and compare the phonic alphbets of each and they will show the different sound variants.

Ok, well I'm a Brit and we don't all add 'R's! It depends which county the person comes from. As in the States we have a great variety of dialects here. Also, the better educated a person is, the more likely they are to speak 'the Queen's English' and she doesn't add 'R's!!

For the same reason that New Yorkers (New Yorkas) remove the "r" in words that end in that letter. It's a cultural phenomenon.
