The umpire will will warn them, and then eject them from the game if necessary to stop the childish behavior.

Mark Prior threw some chin music to Barry Bonds a few years back and Bonds took exception to it. Bonds took a few steps toward the mound and Prior told him to bring it on. The home plate ump stepped in front of Bonds while the benches cleared. Players milled around, while the umps stayed close to the antagonists determined not to let things get out of control.

Neither player really did anything wrong. Bonds let a young start-up rattle his cage a little. Cooler heads prevailed and the ump said play ball. This is old school baseball.

Depending on what age we are talking about here. If we are talking kids its the umpires job to try to prevent anything from happening. Cutting off the closest participant in the altercation. As for adults, your average softball Joe, you should try to stand in front of the closest participate but do not use any physical force to restrain him i.e grabbing on and trying to hold back. But then for professionals players will work their course try to intervene but don't put yourself in harms way.

Depending on the controversy the umpire will step in and if need be remove one or both players from the game.
