It's due to poor management, starting with the Ford ownership which has kept Matt Millen employed for way too long. This guy must have discriminating pictures or something! He's widely regarded as the worst GM in all of sports, yet he still has a job.
Meanwhile, the Tigers, who were the worst team in baseball, hired Dave Dombrowski as their GM and they have turned into World Series contenders and will be for years to come. Dombrowski built the Marlins into champs while he was in Florida.
And the Pistons have Joe Dumars, who is considered a bright young GM.
So it's all about management.

William Clay Ford Sr. needs to turn the team over to his son and then the Lions will be contenders. Ford Jr. can't stand Millen and wanted him fired long ago, but daddy is a loyal boss giving his employees the benefit of the doubt. Once the team is turned over to the son Millen will be unemployed and a new era will take this team to the same competitive level as the rest of the teams in the D. So all you Lion fans should be letting Mr. Ford Sr. know that Millen must go and Ford Jr. should take over operations of the team as soon as possible.

In the case of the Tigers, they play in the same division as baseball's worst team.

In the case of the Pistons, they're a team full of thugs who bully everyone else (that is, until they get owned by Miami and Cleveland in the Eastern Conference Finals).

As for the Red Wings, I really can't answer that, except to say that their Yankee-esque spending was not curtailed by the NHL's economic reform.

The Lions, on the other hand, have been badly managed for a VERY long time, especially since Barry Sanders retired and very much so since Matt Millen was named team president.

THe Lions are the only team in Detroit that is managed by Matt Millen. Enough said.

Simple- all the other teams don't have a dumbass GM like the Lions have Matt Millen. He has not yet realized that drafting a WR in the first round has worked for him (except for Roy Williams). He needs to draft on need and not greed.

The only thing the lions have to do is get some help for your PRO BOWL WR's. Management does not realize that you can get the best WR's in the league, but if you can't get the ball to them how are they going to make plays. If it is the QB replace the QB, but in the lions case I think they need to rethink the offensive line. The lions have some very talented skill players so I think the offensive line needs to be a focus point!!!

Because only the lions are owned by a selfish rich family. The owner does not care so the team is underfunded, but poor auto workers still come to watch the games for some weird reason.

id have to say reason is becuaes every damn year they are taking a WR in the first round. Ill have to admit ya its pretty hard to pass up a type caliber player such as calvin but the past two years they didnt need to drive mike williams when they had roy and rickey prole. I still believe they have a QB problem and there defence getting rid of there best defensive player in my eyes Drye Bly. They have done nothing to help there D at all and there offenise they need to figure out how to get kevin to stay healthy

Because the lions are owned by William Clay Ford and run by Matt (I sure do love drafting wide receivers) Millen.

"stop taking wr in the first round would be a good start "
I agree. The lions are still missing a good quaterback, and i have no idea why they let Jeff Garcia go, that was just silly.. he could have helped them rebuil... er.. build i guess as they never really had a great team ever.

I always wanted to see a trio in detriot.. barry sanders, a good qb, and reciever.... never happened though..
